Are Men and Women from the same planet in Shipping
Though women face a major hurdle getting a training berth onboard ships but once on board they face the similar issues of long work hours and isolation. On The Right side, shipping is one profession where they get paid equal to Male counterparts and there does not seem to be any glass ceiling per se. Talking To women seafarers it was felt that mentoring plays an important part in their grooming and mentoring by senior female officers helps. Many women seafarers complain of Loneliness, Long Working Hours, Hard work to gain acceptability from superiors and social family problems. These four are the major grouses of Male seafarers too.
“So welcome to the bandwagon, sisters, that what majority of male fraternity says”
Shavani Misra, Now a second engineer with a leading Foreign Employer said,” Attitude does matters. You have to prove yourself without demanding any extra favors and Onboard ships, it is work and healthy attitude towards hard work only earns you respect and acceptability.”
